For more than six months, Underwriters Laboratories has been working with experts of all kinds to make the UL Safety Tour an experience that will be fun, educational and challenging for you and your family. Here is a “behind the scenes” look at the UL Safety Tour.
As you approach the UL Safety Tour truck, you might first be drawn to three huge plasma screens playing video. Did you know that UL tests over 19,000 separate products every year? Or that the typical home has more than 125 UL tested products?
Outside the vehicle is a children’s fire safety obstacle course. Kids will learn how to drop to the ground to avoid smoke, “stop, drop and roll” to put out flames, get to the nearest safe exit, and then dial 911 on a special giant phone.
Check out the cool displays of what UL does every day to test products for safety. Watch as a heavy weight drops on a fire safety helmet, simulated rain water hits an outdoor lamp, and a special device opens and closes a refrigerator door. Did you know that UL tests refrigerator doors up to 30,000 times to make sure that they will still easily open from the inside should a child inadvertently climb in?
Inside the truck is where you’ll find real state-of-the-art technology. You are
greeted by a virtual John Drengenberg, a 40-year employee of UL who is a safety
engineer and a worldwide spokesperson on safety.
Next stop: “Look for the Mark Challenge” – a touch-screen game console where you have 30 seconds to find items in a kitchen or garage that have the UL Mark. Did you see the gas can?
Test your skills on PASSMaster, the infrared fire extinguisher game. Using a modified actual fire extinguisher and an interactive screen, Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the flame, Squeeze the lever, and Sweep from side to side. Great job – you put out the fire!
Kids leave the UL Safety Tour with a special bilingual coloring
book that helps teach them about important safety topics. You can download
the coloring book here. Mom and Dad – be sure to establish a Family Fire
Escape Plan and talk about it with your kids. You can view
a sample plan here.
The UL Safety Tour will be a fun and educational experience for the entire
family – all ages. You will have fun and you will leave knowing more about
keeping you and your family safe.
