Product Testing Lab Ethical Considerations

by admin on October 19th, 2010

There are a wide range of options with regards to how most products can be tested. One very controversial option used in product testing lab facilities around the country and around the world is the use of animals. Typically animal testing is completed with medical, food, pharmaceutical, beauty and personal care products, however other products may also be tested through use on various animals from mice through to primates.
Several organizations including PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, actively campaign to develop consumer understanding of animal testing. They argue that the tests are cruel and completely unethical, forcing animals to endure incredible pain and medical complications before they are euthanized or die as a result of the tests. New techniques including computer generated models and databases are providing to be as effective as animal testing and much less costly overall.
Other ethical considerations in product testing lab facilities include the actual handling of the documentation and results. Accredited labs are designed to work independent of the product developer, providing unbiased, accurate information. Ethical concerns can arise when the product testing lab has some type of vested interest in the product. Through disclosure and following a comprehensive set of regulations with regards to conflict of interest issues these types of ethical concerns should not come into play within a well run product testing lab.
